Academic Curriculum
The curriculum at Eveline Day School is broad and balanced. It covers all the statutory requirements laid down in the National Curriculum with emphasis on the core subjects: Literacy, Numeracy and Science.
Technology, History, Geography, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Music, Art are foundation subjects. We cover the cross curricular themes of citizenship and PSHE.
Children pass entrance exams to both state and selective schools, and scholarships are encouraged.
At the heart of the curriculum there is a core which encompasses values, morals, ethics and health.
The core areas will not be taught in isolation as these skills and concepts within them need to be applied across a broad range of experience for them to be fully understood. In turn the use of skills and ideas in the core areas improves understanding in other subjects.
The individual progress of each child is monitored. Tests are taken at the end of each year. Targets are set for pupils each year and there are independent education plans for those with special needs. KS1 and KS2 results are good and are consistently above average. Parents have ongoing contact with the teachers on a daily basis and know how their child is doing.
At Eveline Day School we offer:
Breadth – a wide range of learning experiences
Balance – a balance between all areas of the curriculum, both in the ways that teachers plan and in their teaching methods.
Continuity – ways of ensuring that the curriculum is in tune with pupils ages abilities and needs.
Progression – ways of ensuring that pupils learning experiences provide them with appropriate challenges as they go through school.
Differentiation – ways of seeing what each child needs and providing teaching to meet their need.
The Foundation Years 3 – 5 years of age
A firm foundation for learning is provided in our early year classes. We follow the foundation stage programme. This covers the six areas of learning. Each area has a set of related early learning goals.
- Personal and social
- Communication, language and literacy
- Mathematical development
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
Key Stage 1 (5 – 7 years of age)
The school concentrates on the development of:
- basic skills of numeracy and literacy in a cross curricular way.
- appropriate approaches and attitudes to learning.
- responsible social behaviour.
Key Stage 2 (7 - 11 years of age)
At Key Stage the school will continue to build on the foundations laid down in KS1. We aim to:
- Further develop study and organisational skills.
- Increase independent learning
- Teach the content of the subjects to a high standard
- Prepare pupils for secondary school.
Special Educational Needs
We aim to provide equality of opportunity and access to the curriculum for all pupils. We identify special needs as early as possible ( including more able) and endeavour to meet those needs. We have a co-ordinator for special needs (SENCO).
Homework
Weekly homework is given from an early age. Daily reading is encouraged throughout the school. Homework is essential in developing good work habits and strengthening the link between home and school.
Assessment
We assess the achievements of pupils using:
- Foundation Stage Profile
- Teacher Assessment
- Reading and Maths screening
- End of Key Stage 1 National Test
- Year 3, 4 and 5 tests
- End of Key Stage 2 National Tests
The result of tests and teacher assessments are used to inform lesson plans and class activities.
Reports
Parents receive two written reports in December and July. Parents have opportunities throughout the year to discuss pupils achievements and be involved in their child's learning.
Professional Services
A moderator from the Wandsworth Professional Centre oversees and guides our teaching and testing methods and standards ie. Statutory Assessment Tasks (SATS) and the national curriculum. Pupils are required to take these tests at 5, 7 and 11 years.
